En 1552 Francisco López de Gómara publicó su Historia de la conquista de México, segunda parte de la Historia general de Indias, con la pretensión de abordar la crónica más completa sobre el descubrimiento y colonización del Nuevo Mundo. Una obra que alcanzó un éxito arrollador durante el siglo XVI, frente a otros textos que abordan momentos puntuales de la conquista.

A pesar de que Francisco López nunca cruzó el Atlántico, desplegó todo su saber humanístico y se remontó a fuentes como las Cartas de relación de Hernán Cortés o la Historia de Fernández de Oviedo, además de documentarse con información de primera mano a la que pudo acceder por su amistad con las altas esferas del Consejo de Indias.

Gómara dirigirá el relato hacia la conquista de México, partiendo de la biografía de Cortés como hilo conductor para delinear poco después su itinerario hacia la toma de Tenochtitlan y concluir con su muerte.

Sin embargo, la obra del clérigo Gómara pasa por distintos avatares como acusaciones de plagio y una prohibición real, aunado al odio de sus propios coetáneos por los contenidos polémicos de su narración, que favorece desmedidamente la figura de Hernán Cortés.


La Historia de la conquista de México constituye la parte segunda de la Historia general de Indias. Podemos pensar que la idea primaria de Francisco López de Gómara fue escribir solo sobre la conquista de México, pero para ubicarla en el contexto americano, decidió referirse primero a todo lo acontecido en América. Decimos tal cosa porque los dos textos los escribió durante su residencia en la casa de Hernán Cortés y por supuesto que de sus pláticas con él, y de informaciones recabadas de otros conquistadores, le nació el deseo de escribir y dar a conocer todo lo relativo a la actuación del extremeño en tierras mexicanas.

Para nosotros el plan de la obra tuvo un diseño muy sencillo. Se trataba de referir la actuación de Hernán Cortés durante la conquista de México y, a la vez, dar a conocer quiénes eran las gentes que habitaban estas tierras, así como las costumbres y formas de vida de que eran poseedores. Éste fue el programa que desarrolló López de Gómara al escribir su Historia de la conquista de México, como tendremos oportunidad de comprobar en el curso de este estudio.
