About the Book

Histories of Exhibition Design in the Museum highlights the politics, practicalities and creativity of exhibition making, using case studies from a diverse range of institutions from around the world.

Developing an expanded and decentred model for exhibition design history, the book explores the shifting nature of professional design over the last 250 years. Attentive to the hierarchies of ethnicity, race, class, gender and sexuality that have informed exhibition design and its histories, the volume works through a postcolonial and decolonial lens to highlight the plural experiences that constitute museum exhibition making. It recognises the value and experiences of many types of exhibition maker and explores the activities, agendas, experiences and impact of those involved in temporary and permanent museum exhibition design. Through their emphasis on process and labour, the chapters privilege the work of the people and everyday objects that have rarely been acknowledged in museum histories. Attending to the complex afterlives of exhibition design, the book nurtures an understanding of how historical methods have influenced museums today.

Drawing on postcolonial and decolonial analysis, the chapters in Histories of Exhibition Design in the Museum offer lessons and models for a more equitable future in both scholarship and practice. The book will appeal to academics and students working in museum studies, design and architecture, as well as those engaged in the study of culture, history and the history of art and design.
