About the Book

New England has a rich history of the performing arts--from The Grand Theatre, built in 1938 in Ellsworth, Maine to Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut formed in 1931. Throughout the New England theater scene, the shows produced have routinely been groundbreaking and critically successful. There is a long history of producers trying out shows in New England and even today many Tony Award-winning plays and musicals originate from theaters in New England before transferring to Broadway. These theaters are where so many stars honed their craft before breaking out onto the Great White Way! Theatre critic Tim Leininger takes the reader to across New England telling the story of theater in the region through interviews with historians and leaders of the theaters community. There is a history of the venues themselves--over 100 theaters are featured-- followed by profiles of significant performances and visitor information From Williamstown to Cape Cod to the Great Barrington Stage, there are few regions in America as steeped in theater tradition as New England.
About the Author: Tim Leininger has been theater critic for the Journal Inquirer since Dec. 2016. A graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Connecticut. He began his career performing for 10 years in New York with various choirs, the Liederkranz Opera, the One World Symphony, and directing the Central Baptist Church Chamber Choir. He has worked as a freelance lighting technician, and has worked at Hartford Stage as a stage hand and follow spot operator. Notable performances include singing in choirs for Barbra Streisand at Madison Square Garden, the United Nations celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and The Today Show; was a featured soloist in One World Symphony's production of Handel's "Saul," and was tenor section leader for the 2003 Millennium Theatre presentation of Handel's "Messiah" in Brighton Beach, NY. He reviews theater across New England and Broadway and he is a member of the Connecticut Critics Circle, the American Theatre Critics Association, and the Outer Critics Circle.
