Jeden Tag versuchen Hunderte von Künstlern, Plattenproduzenten oder Songwriter einen erfolgreichen Musiktitel zu komponieren. Die Musikindustrie kreierte die Bezeichnung "Hit" für jene Songs. Über die Chartplatzierung manifestieren sich diese Hits. Es gibt Abschätzungen über die Flop-Rate in der Musikindustrie, wobei auf einen Hit zehn Flops folgen. Daher stellt sich die Frage, warum ein bestimmter Song kommerziellen Erfolg erreicht und ein anderer dagegen nicht. In dieser Arbeit ist die Betrachtung von Singles der Interpretin Madonna vordergründig. Die Materialgrundlage bildet der Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart der USA, zugleich die älteste und repräsentativste Single-Hitliste des weltgrößten Musikmarktes. Als Kriterium zur Einordnung des Erfolgs einer Single gilt ein Einstieg in diesen Chart. Ein Hit ist durch Popularität bestimmt, die sich allerdings nicht in absoluten Zahlen ausdrücken lässt. Vielmehr ist es ein Konstrukt industrieller Mechanismen, das zum Zweck der Absatzförderung eingeführt wurde, um die Produkte beim Musikhörer attraktiv anpreisen zu können. Im Gegenzug soll ein Flop einen erfolglosen, sang- und klanglos untergegangenen Titel bezeichnen. Die Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Arbeitsschritte: Wahrnehmung, Analyse und Vergleich. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, Aussagen darüber zu treffen, ob sich Muster, Auffälligkeiten oder Regelmäßigkeiten erkennen lassen, die auf Merkmale eines Hits hinweisen können. Popsongs verkörpern eine spezifische Kombination von klanglichen, technischen, ökonomischen, semiotischen, ideologischen und kulturellen Bedingungen und Wirkungen. Es scheint sich ein komplexes Gefüge dahinter zu verbergen, das den Zusammenhang von Erfolg oder Misserfolg von Popsongs beeinflusst.
