About the Book

In January 1890, the island of Heligoland was British. By the year's end the British Government had handed the island over to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany in return for transitory advantages in East Africa. Both Kaiser Wilhelm and Adolf Hitler fortified the island and made it into a U-boat base. After both the First and Second World Wars, Heligoland's inhabitants wanted to be British again, but this was never allowed. This book tells What Might Have Happened if Britain had retained Heligoland, with an idea of the effects on world events up to 1925. And it all starts with the marriage of a young Danish Princess to Prince Albert Edward, Queen Victoria's eldest son...
About the Author: Richard Edkins was born in 1953 and has had a rather involved life that stimulated his interest in history, archaeology, science and 'the Great What If?' After writing for amusement and self-education since 1979 (including text for various novel ideas) he began some Internet work in 1997 and gradually evolved his own style. In 2008 he joined the Alternative History.com forum and since 2010 has started 45 timelines and discussions. Following the success online of the 'HMS Heligoland' timelines and the demands of online readers, in 2011 he agreed to make it into his first book. The text has altered and grown into something different and the book has had to be split into at least two sections. Other books are in the mill and will be available presently, now the weary author knows what to expect. The author has worked for three local authorities, Historic Scotland, a call-centre, Tesco and as a self-employed website-writer and now an author. Others say he writes 'a thundering good yarn', so maybe that is true. Being 62 at time of writing, the author is looking forwards to an (exhausting) retirement once 67. The author is married with two daughters, two grandsons, a grand-daughter and two decent sons-in-law. He has a cat, a car and a caravan, an allotment, a love of writing and books, and the certainty that there is always more to be learnt.
