Darüber hinaus werden nicht nur die Aussagen und Beurteilungen seiner Zeitgenossen betrachtet, sondern ist es auch wichtig, wie die nachfolgenden Generationen von Schriftstellern und Historikern über ihn urteilten, da sie möglicherweise auf Grund der zeitlichen Distanz ein genaueres Bild von ihm hatten. "Mein Herr, wir haben die Absichten vernommen, die man dem König eingeflüstert hat. Aber Sie, mein Herr, der Sie sein Organ gegenüber den Generalständen nicht sein können, der Sie hier weder Sitz noch Stimme, noch das Recht zu sprechen haben, Sie sind nicht befugt, uns seine Rede ins Gedächtnis zu rufen. Um indessen jede Weitläufigkeit und jede Verzögerung zu vermeiden, erkläre ich Ihnen: Wenn man Sie beauftragt hat, uns von hier zu entfernen, müssen Sie sich den Befehl zur Anwendung von Gewalt verschaffen. Denn wir werden nur der Macht der Bajonette weichen." Mit diesen Worten, die am 23. Juni 1789 an den Oberzeremonienmeister Marquis de Dreux-Brézé gerichtet wurden, änderte sich die politische Situation in Frankreich. König Ludwig XVI, der bis dahin als absoluter Monarch regierte, verlor nach jenem Tag zunehmend seine Souveränität. Denn nachdem der König dem Adel und dem Klerus den Befehl erteilte, sich der Nationalversammlung anzuschließen, erklärte sich am 9. Juli 1789 die Nationalversammlung zur Verfassungsgebenden Versammlung, die Konstituante. Damit hatte der "Dritte Stand" seinen ersten großen Sieg gegen das Ancien Régime gefeiert. Wer war aber der Mann, aus dessen Mund jene revolutionären Worte stammten? Wer war der Mann, der den Mut hatte, sich dem Befehl des Königs zu widersetzen, der lautete, dass man sich zu trennen habe, um sich am nächsten Morgen in die jedem Stande
