Mit dem Beginn des Kolonialismus folgte die Konfrontation mit "fremden" Kulturen erstmals auf globaler Ebene - die Analyse von Kulturen - und demzufolge Identitäten - als etablierte Wissenschaft wurde geboren. Oft thematisiert in Niederschriften der Aufklärung, schaffte Françoise de Graffigny mit ihrem Werk "Lettres d'une Péruvienne" einen populären Briefroman, der seiner Zeit als ein unterhaltendes Medium mit ebenjener Thematik diente. Um komplexere Wechselwirkungen zwischen Kulturen näher zu analysieren, bildeten sich indes in der geistigen Strömung des Postkolonialismus Hypothesen heraus, die das konventionelle Denkvermögen sprengten: Raumtheorien. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Logik und einige Hauptbegriffe der postkolonialen Raumtheorie darzustellen und auf ihre Bedeutung für den Roman "Lettres d'une Péruvienne" hinzuweisen. Dabei wird begründet, inwiefern Raum mit Identität und Heimatlosigkeit der Protagonistin des Romans einhergehen. Als einen wichtigen Aspekt der Raumtheorie soll Homi Bhabhas Begriff der Hybridität und dessen Entwicklung im dritten Raum behandelt werden. Dazu skizziert die Arbeit zunächst postkolonialistische Denkstrukturen des Edward Soja: hier wird seine Raumvorstellung fokussiert. Anschließend wird Homi K. Bhabhas Kulturverständnis angeführt, die als Grundlage für seine Überlegungen zu Raum und die damit zusammenhängende Bildung von Identitäten dient. Schließlich werden die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse an Françoise de Graffignys Briefroman angewandt und deren Bedeutung für die Protagonistin analysiert.
