About the Book

Dies Buch ist keine vollständige Hymnensammlung; ich habe nur ei-nige der schönsten Hymnen aus dem Schatz der katholi-schen Kirche übertragen. Dabei kopiere ich nicht immer das Metrum der Origina-le. Auf Reime verzichte ich, da das Lateini-sche viel reimfreudiger ist als das Deutsche und eine Kopie des Reimschemas oft gezwungen klingt. Zwei der hier vorgestellten Werke sind keine Hymnen, keine Preis-lieder, - das 24. Lied der Carmina Burana handelt von der Hinfällig-keit der Welt, und Omnis mundi creatura des Alanus ab Insulis be-schreibt die Vergänglichkeit des Menschen. Beide Lieder beinhalten die Aufforderung zu einem christlichen, von materiellen Werten un-beeindruckten Leben. Ich habe sie aufge-nommen, weil ich auch hier-in eine Form des Gotteslobes sehe - und weil ich sie schön finde und sonst nicht weiß, wohin damit. Das mittelalterliche Latein wurde anders geschrieben als das klassi-sche; so wurden æ und oe zu e, t und c vor hellen Vokalen zu z. Die klassische Schreibweise ist aber seit der Renaissance wieder üblich und wird (leider) auch im Brevier und im Gra-duale angewandt. Da-durch ist sie vielen Lateinkundigen weit geläufiger als die Schreib-weise der Originale, und so habe ich sie widerwillig übernommen. Die Doxologien am Ende einiger Hymnen sind spätere Zutaten; ich habe die Doxologien nur dort übernommen, wo sie vermut-lich schon im Original verwendet wurden. Ich habe im übrigen bei allen Hymnen versucht, spätere Textabwei-chungen zu vermeiden, habe aber weder die Fähigkeit noch die Zeit, hier noch größere Pingelei aufzuwenden als bei Wortwahl und Me-trum meiner Übertragungen. Nach den vielen lateinischen Hymnen bilden den Abschluss dieser Sammlung drei Gesänge in neueren Sprachen. Zu Wort kommen die Kirchenlehrer Alfonso Maria de Liguori und Thérèse de Lisieux so-wie eine fast unbekannte Autorin des 19. Jhs., C. Maude Battersby.
