Estratto: ... ne capriccioso, ne mercantile, e non puo imporsi a chi non lo ha ancora sentito. L'amore dev'essere spontaneo. L'amore non e umano, ma divino. L'amore ne si compra ne si vende. Evviva, in proposito, gli artigiani ed i lavoratori dei campi, in tale oggetto lodevolmente primitivi. Essi hanno quasi mai necessita dei.... sensali di matrimonio, perche non hanno doni da far loro. Fanno all'amore all'aperto, testimoni il sole, la luna, l'aria e Dio. Talvolta accade che due sposi della classe cosi detta piu civile, vadano al talamo siccome due forestieri, e viaggiano i primi giorni insieme, e poi ciascuno per proprio conto. L'indole rispettiva, del resto, non si sa il perche precisamente, ma solo presumibilmente, viene a palesarsi sempre dopo il matrimonio e mai prima lorquando si vedono le sole virtu. Un caso psicologico. Da qui la eterna ragione della incompatibilita dei caratteri, da qui la reciproca trascuranza. Allora o l'uno o l'altro cade, od insieme cadono entrambi.... e nascera.... quanto noi dobbiamo lasciarvi immaginare. Importa dunque meditarvi intorno, dai pochi, della sola dote, amorosi delle poche, del maritarsi in genere, entusiaste. Ed anche questo Capitolo amaro come la Genziana, e ormai esaurito. PARTE SECONDA CAPITOLO III. Lo studio di pittura Da quindici giorni circa, Alfredo lavorava in fretta e furia attorno al suo quadro, Il Parlatorio del Convento di Monache. Lo voleva compiere in breve, che lo cuoceva brama ardente, di rivedere anche un momento solo, per una propizia occasione, la sua Violetta. Volea bearsi anco una volta di quella vista a lui tanto cara. Di quell'angelico sorriso, che egli nel suo quadro non sapeva col penello emulare. L'avrebbe veduta fra l'ombra del monastero, ma non importa. Non potea persuadersi, siccome Violetta, tanto giovane e bella, col suo sentire tanto squisito, tanto nobile, tanto giocondo, volesse seppellirsi in un Convento, rinunciando cosi alle gioje comuni della vita.
