I piloti degli Spitfire della RAF avevano respinto la Luftwaffe durante la Battaglia d'Inghilterra e ora, nell'estate del 1941, dovevano affrontarla per difendere l'Europa. Non avevano però previsto la comparsa dei Focke-Wulf Fw 190, i nuovi caccia tedeschi, con motore radiale, che riuscivano a contrastare facilmente gli inadeguati Spitfire V. Quando finalmente la RAF riuscì a catturarne un esemplare nel 1942, ci si accorse che le brutte notizie dovevano ancora arrivare. Il 190, infatti, si rivelò più veloce di qualsiasi caccia britannico o statunitense e, con un armamento poderoso, l'agile velivolo tedesco poteva distruggerli con facilità. Per il Giappone lo Zero fu, in realtà, assai più di un aeroplano, ma il simbolo stesso della potenza aerea dell'Impero; er gli Alleati fu assai più di un implacabile avversario, ma un incubo e al tempo stesso un mito. A lungo gli furono attribuite delle virtù in gran parte immaginarie, poiché le sue uniche e incontestabili doti erano un'eccezionale manovrabilità e un altrettanto eccezionale autonomia. Il Mitsubishi A6M è uno di quegli aerei che non potrebbe suscitare opinioni più contrastanti, ora ignorato, ora temuto, infine ridicolizzato, e poi ancora ripreso in considerazione, mitizzato, analizzato criticamente, sopravvalutato, sottovalutato, e così via senza soluzione di continuità. L'Hawker Hurricane, uragano, a suo tempo non avrebbe potuto esprimere meglio nei fatti quello che era il suo nome. Nato come Fury Monoplane, si proponeva di continuare in versione monoplana il progetto del Fury, uno dei migliori e più raffinati tra i caccia della vecchia generazione. Creato da Sidney Camm della HG Hawker Engineering Company, ideato fin dal 1933 attorno al nuovo motore RR PV 12 e rispondente alla specifica F.5/34, che chiamava per un caccia dotato di 8 mitragliatrici leggere, davvero un aumento impressionante rispetto alle due normalmente portate all'epoca.
