La Rivoluzione Ungherese dell'ottobre del 1956 e la conseguente invasione sovietica del Paese appena proclamatosi libero, indipendente, democratico e, soprattutto, neutrale, sensibilizzarono e appassionarono per giorni e giorni, e in maniera travolgente, l'attenzione, l'apprensione e la commozione dell'opinione pubblica di tutto il mondo.
L'intervento dell'Armata Rossa fu caratterizzato dall'impiego di decine e decine di carri armati e seguito da una feroce e sanguinosa repressione. Almeno 250.000 ungheresi, soprattutto giovani, riuscirono a sfuggire al carcere o al capestro varcando il confine del loro Paese con l'Austria e dando così vita a un imponente esodo di massa.
Il dibattito e l'aspro confronto politico-ideologico tra i sostenitori delle ragioni dei sovietici e dei comunisti ungheresi da una parte e chi bollava invece l'aggressione russa come un crimine contro l'umanità dall'altra, monopolizzarono e infiammarono a lungo il già acceso contrasto tra i partiti che definivano allora il panorama parlamentare e sociale dell'Italia di quegli anni.
L'imbarazzo e il disagio dei sostenitori della "dittatura del proletariato", costretti a spiegare il come e il perché proprio i proletari magiari si fossero ribellati a quelli che a parole sarebbero dovuti essere un sistema e un governo sotto il loro controllo, fu grande e di non facile soluzione.
Altrettanto grande e difficile da gestire fu il turbamento e la perplessità di chi, parteggiando per quello che allora veniva definito il "mondo libero", dovette prendere atto dell'inerzia, dell'indifferenza e della rassegnata passività di quello che, sempre allora, veniva qualificato come il "Blocco Occidentale".
Gli uni e gli altri finirono dunque con lo stendere un impietoso quanto ipocrita velo di silenzio e di oblio sull'Ottobre Ungherese.

Questo libro si propone di squarciare quel velo raccontando alcune delle vicende più intime e personali di alcuni tra i tanti anonimi protagonisti di quelle vicende, mettendo a nudo le loro emozioni, i loro sentimenti, il loro dolore.
Sempre attraverso vicende intime e personali, i racconti della seconda parte del libro si propongono invece di evidenziare come le conseguenze morali e culturali di quel forzato silenzio e di quella strumentale dimenticanza continuino a qualificare la morale imperante e la cultura dominante ancora ai nostri giorni.
