Recent world conference on children's education testify to a growing appreciation of the crucial impor5tance of the child's earliest years. Well conceived quality early childhood programmes can help meet the diverse needs of young children during the crucial years of life, enhance their readiness for schooling and have a positive and permanent influence on later school achievement. A recent large-scale study showed that the ICDS has a significant positive impact on both motor and mental development of beneficiaries. A follow up of these children in school to assess the long-term benefits of the programme was one of the recommendations of this study.The present study is not only comprehensive with regard to the number of variable studied, but it is a follow-up of the earlier ICDS exposed and unexposed cohorts into school so that the long-term impact of the programme on intellectual development and school achievement can be documented.The study was conducted with the overall objective to assess the long-term impact of the ICDS on scholastic achievement and intellectual development of school going children between 7-9 years of age who had earlier been exposed to the programme.The study findings show that the ICDS programme has a beneficial long-term impact on intellectual development but limited effect on scholastic achievement. About Author : The author Sobharani a fast emerging expert in the field of ICDS has graduated from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. She obtained her M Sc. In Home Science also from Sri Venkateswara University and Doctoral Degree in Human Development and family studies from Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswavidyalayam, Tirupati.Dr. Sobharani choose to work on "Long term Impact of Preschool Education Component of ICDS on Scholastic Achievement and Intellectual Development of Rural Children" for her Ph.D which took shape in the form of the present book, a real work experience, indeed. The author has thrown much light on intellectual development of rural children a frontier area of research, the fruits of which will lead India's future generation to better health, quality of life and responsible citizens of the country.The author is currently running an NGO (SKEWS). One of the primary objective is to provide free education for economically disadvantaged children and this has been made possible by establishing a free school under the name Prabhus.
