Ungeduldig wartet der Lebensmittelhändler August Klode im Herbst 1914 auf seine Einberufung zum Kriegsdienst. Endlich im Frühjahr 1915 ist es soweit, er wird in Bremen kurz ausgebildet und dann an die Westfront in blutige Grabenkämpfe gegen die Franzosen geschickt. Dort trifft er auf hilfreiche und auf egoistische Kameraden; auf vorbildliche Vorgesetzte, aber auch auf einen bösartigen Kompaniefeldwebel. Schließlich wird er Schreiber beim Zahlmeister des Bataillons. Das Ende des Krieges und die beginnende Revolution erlebt er in einem Lazarett in Schlesien. Die Schilderungen vermitteln einen anschaulichen Eindruck von den Grausamkeiten der Grabenkämpfe, den Leiden der Soldaten, aber auch von den Annehmlichkeiten des Lebens in der Etappe. August Klode war deutschnational gesinnt und kaisertreu, auch weit über das Kriegsende hinaus. Er schrieb aus der historischen Situation von 1923 heraus; das sollte man bei der Lektüre dieses Berichts eines Zeitzeugen berücksichtigen. Die unterkühlte Schilderung brutaler Kampfszenen erinnert an Ernst Jüngers Buch "In Stahlgewittern".
About the Author: August Klode wurde am 21. September 1882 als drittes Kind des Krankenpflegers Ferdinand Klode und seiner Ehefrau Auguste in der westpreußischen Stadt Marienwerder geboren. Nach der Volksschule arbeitete er zunächst als Verkäufer in Lebensmittel-Geschäften. Im Jahr 1907 heiratete er, und seit 1910 war er Geschäftsführer einer Filiale des "Vereins Hamburgischer Staatsbeamter" in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. Das Ehepaar hatte 4 Kinder, von denen drei vor Beginn des I. Weltkrieges geboren wurden. Seine letzten Jahre als Berufstätiger verbrachte er als kaufmännischer Angestellter der Seeberufsgenossenschaft. August Klode erlebte den I. Weltkrieg als einfacher Soldat an der Westfront und schrieb seine Erinnerungen daran im Jahre 1923 nieder. Er starb hochbetagt am 5. Dezember 1972.
