Die Herausforderungen an individuelle und kollektive Identitäten sind mit dem Prozess der Globalisierung gewachsen, und die Schaffung von Identifikationsräumen inmitten einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft und komplexen Vernetzung gestaltet sich zunehmend schwieriger und konfliktreicher. In seiner Rede zum Thema "The City and the Quality of Life" stellt PASCAL LAMY Städte als lokale Verankerungen in einem globalen Netzwerk heraus. Vor allem Megastädte, hochkomplexe Siedlungskörper mit einer extremen Dynamik, stellen als Orte von Identitätskonstruktion eine große Herausforderung für das Selbstverständnis von Individuen und Kollektiven dar. In dieser Hinsicht fällt ein besonderes Augenmerk auf Los Angeles, da die Stadt zu einer der schnellst wachsenden, ethnisch diversifiziertesten und räumlich weitläufigsten Megastädte der Welt geworden ist. Die theoretischen Grundlagen für die Konstruktion von Identität und die Differenzierung von Raumbezügen werden in Kapitel 2 dargestellt. Zunächst wird die Bildung personaler Identität beschrieben; bei der Betrachtung kollektiver Identität liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Herausstellung des Konzeptes der ethnischen Identität. Anschließend werden Raumkategorien und ihre Grenzen als Ausdruck der geographies of power diskutiert. In Kapitel 3 wird die "Megastadt" als Ort von Identifikation und Identität thematisiert. Unter den Vorzeichen der Globalisierung werden soziale, wirtschaftliche, politische und kulturelle Prozesse beschrieben, die zur Herausbildung einer Megastadt mit Global City-Funktion führen können.
