Il III miglio della via Prenestina e noto per la presenza di uno dei complessi architettonici piu importanti del Suburbio di Roma, ovvero i resti tradizionalmente attribuiti alla Villa dei Gordiani. La speculazione edilizia del XX secolo ha profondamente mutato l' intera area al punto che risulta estremamente problematico ricostruirne con chiarezza il contesto archeologico. Esso era caratterizzato da una necropoli romana che fu scavata nel 1861 dall' archeologo Lorenzo Fortunati, il quale, nei suoi rendiconti, non ne documento sufficientemente la topografia. Per comprendere come fossero articolate le sepolture e fondamentale lo studio dei tituli pedaturae. La definizione dello spazio funerario, noto dalle dimensioni in fronte et in agro tramandate dai testi epigrafici, permette infatti di valutare l' estensione ed il numero delle aree sepolcrali rinvenute. Le caratteristiche dei supporti epigrafici consentono altresi di individuare le tipologie di tombe, la maggior parte delle quali apparteneva ad esponenti del ceto libertino vissuti tra I e II secolo. I dati raccolti in questo volume, che si fondano sullo studio epigrafico e sul recupero della documentazione archivistica, forniscono nuovi elementi che mettono in relazione il sepolcreto con le adiacenti strutture residenziali e produttive della Villa.
About the Author: Marco Erpetti, laureato a Pavia in Archeologia Classica ed Epigrafia Latina, e impegnato, dal 2008, nello studio sugli scavi di Lorenzo Fortunati del 1861-62 sulla via Prenestina, in collaborazione con il Reparto per la Raccolta Epigrafica dei Musei Vaticani. Alcuni risultati preliminari della ricerca, che ha come obiettivo l' edizione completa di tutti i reperti, sono gia stati divulgati in alcuni contributi: Nuove osservazioni su alcune are sepolcrali del Museo Gregoriano Profano ex Lateranense, in BMonMusPont XXVII, 2010, pp. 177-210; PCO o PCQ? Rilettura e nuova provenienza di CIL XIV, 457, in Epigraphica LXXIII, 2011, pp. 343-351; Due tituli ricomposti dagli scavi di Lorenzo Fortunati nel 1861 a Tor Sapienza (CIL VI, 18876 e 21624), in BMonMusPont XXX, 2012 (2014), pp. 63-72.
