Une chronique dans le temps avec, comme fil rouge, une enfant apeurée suivant ses parents depuis la Grèce moribonde d'après-guerre jusqu'au Pays noir où son père travaille comme mineur de fond aux Charbonnages du Centre. Histoire, anecdotes drôles, crises économiques et grèves... servent de toile de fond au chemin chaotique parcouru par ces immigrés du siècle dernier.

La petite Fébronie sert de fil rouge dans cette biographie présentée comme une chronique.
Le récit commence avec la naissance de l'auteure et la description succincte du contexte historique de la Grèce: Indépendance et guerre gréco-turque, Première Guerre Mondiale, réfugiés de l'Asie Mineure, Seconde Guerre Mondiale, Occupation et famine, guerre civile et pauvreté ambiante. Nous suivons ainsi les parents de la narratrice au travers des vicissitudes de la vie et la décision finale du père d'immigrer vers la Belgique avec un contrat de mineur en poche. Il sera rejoint quelques mois plus tard par son épouse et ses deux enfants partis par bateau du Pirée. Nous retrouvons la famille dans les corons à Jumet, commune de Charleroi et surtout les Charbonnages du Centre, avec une description de l'immigration de l'époque, de la catastrophe du Bois du Cazier, du puits de Saint-Quentin et du travail du mineur.
La vie au Pays Noir est truffée d'anecdotes tristes, drôles ou savoureuses, l'Eglise orthodoxe, les cultures et les loisirs trouvent une belle place à ce moment du récit. C'est également l'occasion de parler des fêtes patronales de Sainte Barbe et de la marche de la Madeleine, des vieux cinémas, de l'aérodrome de Gosselies, des berges du canal.
Début des années 1960, elle nous raconte la naissance du petit frère, qui ne sera pas comme les autres enfants, les grandes grèves contre la Loi Unique sur fond de mariage royal et la politique de fédération de la Belgique qui a été générée par la suite.
Enfin, l'histoire du verre dans la région de Charleroi sera également évoquée avec ses années de gloire et sa mort annoncée comme celle des charbonnages.
Le départ vers Bruxelles en 1962 est un pas vers le tome 2.
