About the Book

This book contains the richest diversity of the bamboo taxa in China formally published with rich references and the 2,200 coloured photos about the bamboo plants and habitats.

The all coloured photos in this book, especially the photos of the bamboo species (more than 300 species) which grow in the medium and high mountains, were taken from the original habitats where the type specimens were collected. For example, the coloured photos of Fargesia macclureana and the original habitats were taken from the bamboo forest, at the altitude 3,800 m, Bomi, Tibet, P.R. China.

This book covers the bamboo flower descriptions of more than 200 bamboo species and the coloured photos of the bamboo flowers from more than 50 bamboo species.

This book can be used as important reference book for the professionals and students in bamboo research from universities and research institutes, as well as the practitioners from industrial and commercial enterprises in agriculture and forestry, development, protection, bamboo processing and utilization.

About the Author:

Jun Yi Shi

Jun Yi Shi graduated from Beijing Forestry University with a bachelor's degree in agricultural Science. After graduation, Prof. Shi worked at The Center of Giant Panda Protection and Research of China, Sichuan Forestry School and Sichuan Agricultural University. Prof. Shi has been longtime engaged in forestry education and bamboo study. Currently, he is the director and chief scientist of the International Registration Committee for Bamboo Cultivars; director of Southwest Flower Research and Development Center, Chinese Academy of Forestry; and editorial board member of World Bamboo and Rattan.

Shi acted as the PI to chair over 21 research projects financially supported by international organizations as well as Chinese national and provincial governments. He also received four scientific and technological awards from provincial and national governments. Prof. Shi published four works including Iconographia Bambusoidearum Sinicarum I and II, The Ornamental Bamboos in China, and Claves Generum et Specierum Bambusoidearum Sinicarum. Prof. Shi published 32 new species and infraspecific taxa as well as more than 150 papers. He also chaired five bamboo engineering projects such as China Bamboo Ecological Park (Centennium Bamboo Park) and four master plans for national NRs such as Wolong National Nature Reserve.

Prof. Shi was endowed Outstanding Contributions Expert of Sichuan Province, Green Medal of Sichuan Province, Advanced Worker of Science and Technology in Agriculture of Sichuan Province, and Registrar of International Bamboo Cultivar Registration Authority.

Yu Xiao Zhang

Dr. Yu Xiao Zhang is currently an associate professor at Southwest Forestry University and a member of the International Cultivar Registration Center for Bamboos (ICRCB). She received her B.S. in biological sciences from Hebei University (2004) and her Ph.D. degree in botany from Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2010, supervised by Professor Dezhu Li).

Her research interests mainly focus on the taxonomy, molecular phylogeny and evolution, and DNA barcoding of bamboos. During her Ph.D. study in molecular science, she visited the lab of Prof. Lynn G. Clark at Iowa State University for two months. Dr. Zhang has rich fieldwork experience in bamboo diversity exploration, not only in China but also in French Guiana, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the USA.

Dr. Zhang is the PI of two projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and one project from Chinese Academy of Sciences. She also participated in more than 10 projects funded by NSFC or provincial governments. Dr. Zhang published more than 30 papers, 3 of which were on Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. She also participated in writing some chapters or contents for four books until 2017, that is, Plants of Black-Necked Crane Nature Reserve in Dashanbao, Plant Systematics (third edition) (in Chinese), Plants of China: A Companion to the Flora of China, Iconographia Bambusoidearum SinicarumII. Four new bamboo species, two new bamboo genera, and several other bamboo taxonomic revisions were published by Dr. Zhang. She also used molecular phylogenetic methods to demonstrate the complicated evolutionary history of the temperate woody bamboos (the tribe Arundinarieae).

De Qun Zhou

In January 1982, Prof. Zhou graduated from Beijing Forestry University, China, with B.Sc. in Agriculture; in February 1985, he graduated from Southwest Forestry University, China, with M.Sc. in Agriculture; in May 1995, he graduated from the Asian Institute of Management, the Philippines, with Master in Development Management; and in March 2001, he graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Ph.D. degree. Prof. Zhou has been studied in fungal diversity, ecology, and conservation biology for years. Now he is the deputy director of the International Cultivar Registration Center for Bamboos. He is also an honorary professor at Virginia Tech, USA, and School for International Training, USA.

Prof. Zhou acted as PI to chair over more than 10 research projects funded by international organization as well as Chinese national and provincial governments, with three awards granted by the national and provincial governments.

Zhou compiled five works as co-author, including Edible Fungi, Fungal Diversity in Hong Kong, IconographiaBambusoidearumSinicarum I and II, and The Ornamental Bamboos in China. He also published more than 100 papers including 40 SCI and EI ones such as Publication, Establishment and International Registration for the Bamboo Cultivars and Theory and Practice of the International Bamboo Cultivars Registration.

Li Sha Ma

In 1982, associate professor Li Sha Ma graduated from Beijing Forestry University with B.Sc. in Agriculture. She used to work at Sichuan Forestry School and Sichuan Agricultural University. Prof. Ma has been engaged in botanic education and bamboo research. Prof. Ma retired in 2016 from Sichuan Agricultural University. Currently she is a member of the International Cultivar Registration Committee for Bamboos.

Prof. Ma was the PI or main researcher to chair over eight research projects funded by international organizations as well as Chinese national and provincial governments, with three awards by the Chinese governments at national and provincial levels.

As key co-author, Prof. Ma published four works, namely Iconographia Bambusoidearum Sinicarum I and II, The Ornamental Bamboos in China, and Claves Generum et Specierum Bambusoidearum Sinicarum. She also published 11 new bamboo species and infra-specific taxa in more than 50 papers such as The Cold Hardiness Location of Bambusoideae in China.

Jun Yao

Mr. Jun Yao was born in April 1980. In June 2002, he graduated from Kunming University of Science and Technology with a B Sc. In June 2012, Mr. Yao graduated from Southwest Forestry University with an M.Sc. degree. Currently Yao works at the International Cultivar Registration Center for Bamboos as an assistant to the director.

Yao was the PI or key researcher for more than 10 research projects funded by international organizations and Chinese governments at the national and provincial levels with four awards in science and technology.
