Konrads Schicksal war an das schöne Land gebannt, seit Kuno, sein Mentor, ihn in die Jagdgründe am Kilimandscharo eingeführt hatte. Später lud Christoph Schulz, der für Hagenbeck wilde Tiere fing, Konrad und Frau Ilse zu froher Fahrt in die Longidosteppe ein. Dort wies er, wenn abends die Sonne sank, auf die Felsenmauer des großen afrikanischen Grabens und erzählte von der Wunderwelt oben auf der Bruchstufe, deren Zinne in den Flammen loderte. Von der Stunde an ließ es die beiden nimmer ruhen, bis sie das Ziel ihrer Träume mit ihren Augen sahen.Sie erklettern in diesem Buche den Grabenrand und ziehen durch das Hochland der Riesenkrater in das Land der Blumen und der Tiere, die geheimnisvolle Serengeti. Wer mit ihnen wandert, setzt seinen Fuß in den Garten Eden.Drei Jahre später sah Konrad in dem heißen Ringen um Afrikas Erde die Fluren wieder, die er mit Frau Ilse durchwandert hatte. Als er mit den letzten deutschen Reitern, zwölf an der Zahl, in das Hochland der Riesenkrater und die Blumenwiese der Serengeti versprengt wurde, überwältigte ihn der alte Zauber aufs neue, und er weinte bittere Tränen um das verlorene Paradies.Konrad und Frau Ilse wandern noch heute in mancher Nacht durch das Land ihrer Sehnsucht. Sie können es nie vergessen. Sie wollen es auch nimmer glauben, daß Deutschland die ostafrikanische Erde vergißt. Sie mag uns vorübergehend entrissen sein; verloren geht sie uns nie, solange wir sic nicht selbst aufgeben.Die Photographien stellte Herr Hermann Bötzow zur Verfügung, da Frau Ilses Erinnerungsblätter fast alle die Beute des Feindes wurden.
