About the Book

This guide was written to help families navigate the public school system. Realistically, all high school graduates do not want to go to a four-year college. Therefore, I discuss various ambitious post-secondary options.
About the Author: My name is Melisa M. Hypolite. I was born in Trinidad, an island in the Caribbean. My family then moved to southern New Jersey where I was fortunate enough to live in a small city. From 3rd grade to 12th grade, I attended schools within the same school district and, because of this, I didn't have to deal with much change in regard to my schooling. The distance between my home and my school never required me to take more than one city bus to get to school. After I graduated from high school I moved to Baltimore, MD to attend Morgan State University. Morgan was the only undergraduate college I applied to. Though I enjoyed my years in college and learned a lot, being an out-of-state student with very little scholarship money caused me to accrue excessive student loan debt. I am what's referred to as a first generation college student. Meaning, neither of my parents went to college so we had to figure out the college going process by trial and error. After I graduated from Morgan, I stayed in Baltimore and I have been working with students ever since. I want the students I work with to make better decisions when it comes to post-secondary planning and paying for their education. Most of the youth I work with are first generation college students just like I was. One of the differences between my high school experience and experiences of the students I work with is that some of my students take three buses to get to school every day while I only took one or walked. Some students have attended several different high schools in different parts of the city during their high school career. The students I've worked with come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
