Am 29. März 2002 kommt der Journalist Martin Hübner nach Tunesien, um Urlaub zu machen. Dort lernt er die junge Erfurter Lehrerin Cornelia Pölert kennen - eine Begegnung, die beider Leben verändert. Nachhause zurückgekerht, schreibt Cornelia ihm von ihrer Jugend in der DDR, der Ehe mit dem Palästinenser Yamir und von Sylvia, der fünfjährigen Tochter. Cornelia hatte ihren Mann nach der Wende in Paris kennengelernt, die Ehe dauerte jedoch nur wenige Jahre. Bei einem gemeinsamen Besuch in London wurde Yamir auf offener Straße ermordet - "von einem der nahöstlichen Geheimdiesnste", wie es im Polizieibericht heißt. Am Freitag, 26. April, kehrt auch Hübner nach Deutschland zurück und fährt weiter nach Erfurt, um mit Cornelia über die gemeinsame Zukunft zu sprechen. Unterwegs hört er aus der Redaktion vom Massenmord am Gutenberg-Gymnasium und erhält den Auftrag, dort anhand eines der 16 Opfer über die Katastrophe zu berichten. Der Name des Opfers: Cornelia Pölert. Hübners Zusammenbruch ist vollkommen: Ist die Welt dem Wahnsinn verfallen, leben wir im Tollhaus, in einer Irrenanstalt? Anstatt den Auftrag auszuführen, kündigt er seine Stellung, um künftig fern der Sensationsindustrie für sich allein als freier Autor zu arbeiten. Das traumatische Erlebnis von Erfurt vermag er nur dadurch zu überwinden, dass er die Begegnung mit Cornelia auf der Suche nach dem Sinn als inneren Dialog weiterfürht. Dabei hofft er, auch die eigene Sprache zu finden, ohne die es keine Autorschaft gibt. Das Ergebnis ist der Text "Im toten Winkel". In ihm bemüht sich der Verfasser, aus dem Schatten der Vergangenheit herauszutreten in der Hoffnung, dass sich der Sinn des Geschehens vom Ende her erschließt - "im Gegenlicht". Ob der Versuch gelungen ist, bleibt offfen. Die Vorbemerkung gibt lediglich Auskunft über das Schicksal des Manuskripts, während die Frage, wer der Autor ist, unbeantwortet bleibt. Bekannt war er nur, so heißt es, "dem Nahmen nach".
