Am 9. Juli 1848 betritt Otto Wuppermann in Galveston zum ersten Mal texanischen Boden. Auf dem Schiff hat er zwei andere Deutsche kennengelernt. Gemeinsam kaufen und bewirtschaften die drei eine Farm in der Nähe von Seguin. Im folgenden Jahr verliebt sich Otto in Elise, älteste Tochter der Familie Tips von der Nachbarfarm. Ihre Heirat im September 1850 wird überschattet vom Tod von Elises Vater und Schwester. Auf dem "Wupperhof" betreibt das Paar fortan eine eigene Farm. 1851 kommt die älteste Tochter Clara zur Welt. Bis 1865 folgen sechs weitere Kinder, von denen zwei Im Säuglingsalter sterben. Ottos Gesundheit ist den Strapazen der Farmarbeit auf die Dauer nicht gewachsen. Er nimmt Arbeit in einem Store an und eröffnet 1852 ein eigenes Geschäft in Seguin. Als umtriebiger und ideenreicher Geschäftsmann ist er nun ganz in seinem Element. Er ist viel auf Reisen, während Elise Haus, Kinder und Store hütet und nachts gegen mögliche Gefahren durch Rowdies und Indianer den Sixshooter unter dem Kopfkissen bereithält. Mitte der 1850er Jahre breitet sich in den USA fremdenfeindliche Stimmung aus. Anhänger der Partei der "Know-Nothings" schrecken nicht vor gewalttätigen Angriffen auf Einwanderer zurück. Otto sieht sich und die Seinen in Seguin bedroht. Im Gebirge am Rio Blanco gründet er die neue Stadt "Middletown" und zieht mit seiner Familie dorthin. Die letzten Jahre in Texas stehen im Zeichen des Sezessionskrieges. Otto meldet sich zur Kavallerie, wird aber wegen Rheuma freigestellt. Als "transportation agent for the county of Guadalupe" wird er für die Armee tätig. Elise und Otto hatten den Gedanken an eine Rückkehr nach Deutschland nie aufgegeben. 1865 ist es so weit. Sie verkaufen ihren Besitz, vermieten ihre beiden Sklavinnen und brechen auf. Eine abenteuerliche Reise bringt sie nach Matamoros (Mexico). Von dort bringt sie der Segler "Willy" zurück nach Europa. About the Author: Gerhard Vowinckel (*1946, Dr. rer. pol., Prof. f. Soziologie) ist ein Urenkel von Elise und Otto Wuppermann. Über Elises jüngste Tochter Laura Vowinckel und deren Sohn Werner Vowinckel kamen die in "Im Wilden Westen" und in dem Band "Texanische Tagebücher" (2013) abgedruckten Familienarchivalien auf ihn. Er hat sie abgeschrieben und veröffentlicht um sie Verwandten und anderen Interessenten zugänglich zu machen.
