Das Internet hat in den letzten Jahren gesellschaftliche Veränderungsprozesse ausgelöst, die in ihrer Dramatik nur vergleichbar mit Epochenwechseln wie etwa der Industrialisierung zu sein scheinen. Die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung reagiert darauf auf zweierlei Weise. Das Internet wird als Instrument zur Daten- winnung gebraucht und weitreichend kommerziell genutzt, z. B. in der Markt- und Meinungsforschung; diverse Monografien, Artikel und Konferenzen beschäftigen sich mit den methodologischen Implikationen der Neuen Medien und untersuchen beispielsweise, inwieweit das Antwortverhalten der Nutzer on- wie offline Unt- schiede aufweist. Dagegen steht eine andere Linie der Sozialwissenschaften, die das Internet und die sich daraus reproduzierenden Kommunikationszusammenhänge als genuin soziologische Phänomene betrachtet und damit die Neuen Medien als Gegenstand und nicht als Instrument sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung begreift. In diesem Fall wird dann die ganze Vielfalt internetbasierter Sozialräume erschl- sen, seien es persönliche Webseiten, Chaträume, Multi User Dungeons (MUDs) oder Mailinglisten. Außerhalb des Wissenschaftszweigs ist zudem ein steigendes Interesse zu verzeichnen, nicht nur die entstandenen bzw. die im Entstehen begr- fenen Möglichkeiten zu nutzen, sondern auch eigene Sozialräume zu erschaffen, die beispielsweise im Bereich des Politischen Bürgerbeteiligungen und Online- Konsultationen anbieten. Gerade Online-Foren werden in den verschiedensten funktionalen Teilbereichen der Gesellschaft zunehmend häufiger eingerichtet: sei es zur Kundenbindung im Wirtschaftssektor (sogenannte "brand communities") oder zur Umsetzung deliberativer Demokratievorstellungen.
