About the Book

IN THE MOMENT shares the simple pleasures of nature and of the community-watching a Saturday morning parade, racing terrapins at the annual fish fry, dipping toes in the creek after a long day of work, and following the whir of a hummingbird under the mimosa tree-as it affirms their power to build peace and joy, ready to navigate life's vagaries with humor and grace. Whimsical illustrations bring the collection's metaphors to life. Immersed in nature through compelling images, the reader will travel from present to past, will face tornadoes and a heat wave, and will examine a centuries' old sequoia. Some of the collection's poems open readers' eyes to the dangers of manipulation, anger, and gossip, while others show with compassion the suffering wrought by mental illness and the healing legacy of loving grandparents. IN THE MOMENT celebrates joy, acceptance, and strength in poems that explore themes of relationships, identity, nature, community, and mental illness.
About the Author: Kathryn Woods began writing poetry as a child. She grew up in Wisconsin, but lived with grandparents in Oklahoma while her mother underwent treatment for mental illness. Her love of writing, reading, and children led Woods to a fulfilling, thirty-year career as a high school English teacher, during which time she became especially known for her ability to nurture young writers. Indeed, many of her students graduated from her program having won local, state, and/or national writing awards. Woods earned National Board Certification and was awarded West Mid-High Teacher of the Year. An Oklahoma Writing Project Teacher Consultant since 2001, Woods has made national and state presentations on writing, has published articles on teaching in National Writing Project journals, and has co-directed the Oklahoma Writing Project Summer Institute. While this is her debut poetry collection, Woods' poetry has won state contests. As an Oklahoma Writing Project Teacher Consultant, Woods continues to conduct workshops for students and teachers, demonstrating her techniques for teaching writing. She lives in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband, Glen and daughter, Rachel, where she pursues her loves of bird-watching, writing, reading, quilting, singing, and movie-going.
