About the Book

A clear and concise survey of industrial inorganic chemistry today, with special emphasis on ecology, raw material and energy use as well as sustainability issues.
For this third edition the new author team has thoroughly revised and updated the existing chapters to reflect ongoing industrial processes, supported by first-hand information from chemists and engineers working in the chemical industry. New or enlarged are the chapters on alkali and alkaline earth metals, rare earth metals, technical gases and precious metals. The chapter on metals and their compounds has doubled in size, while that on semiconductor and technology materials is completely new. To facilitate orientation the authors include an introductory section to each chapter, which summarizes the most important points for a certain material or material class.
About the Author: Prof. Martin Bertau heads the Institute of Technical Chemistry at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany). He received his doctorate in 1997 from the University Freiburg (Germany) and afterwards became group leader biotechnology at Rohner AG, Dynamit-Nobel Group, in Basel (Switzerland). In 2000 he went to the Technical University Dresden (Germany) and since 2006 he holds his current position at the Technical University Freiberg. Prof. Bertau's research focuses on the chemistry of raw materials and industrial biotechnology. The aim of his research is the development of integrated processes (zero-waste-concept) for the production and recycling of raw materials for the chemical industry, like rare earth metals, lithium, metals for electronics and silicium. Furthermore, he is interested in the conversion and usage of carbon dioxide and lignocellulose to produce chemical commodities. For his research in the field of phosphorous recycling Prof. Bertau received the resource efficiency award of the German Federal Ministry of Economics in 2012.

Prof. Dr. Armin MÃ1/4ller is honorary professor at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany) and the director of strategic materials at Solar World AG. He studied chemistry at Bergakademie Freiberg and after his doctorate he started his industry career at Bayer AG (Krefeld, Germany) in 1991, dealing with inorganic pigments. In 1995 he became site manager in the field of engineering ceramics and photovoltaics at Bayer AG and in 1996 he changed as operational manager to Bayer Solar GmbH (Freiberg, Germany). At Bayer Solar GmbH, which became Deutsche Solar GmbH in 2000, he was operational manager until 2003 and head of research and development until 2007. During this time, Prof. MÃ1/4ller was responsible for the development of new materials and technologies for the production of wafers, cells and modules for photovoltaic applications. In his current function as director of Solar World AG, Prof. MÃ1/4ller works on the manufacture of high-purity silicium and its crystallization.

Dr. Peter Fröhlich is group leader at the Technical University Freiberg (Germany) since 2011. His group works on the recycling of secondary raw materials and has a special focus on process integration. Dr. Fröhlich studied chemistry at Bergakademie Freiberg and started with his doctorate at the Institute of Biochemistry at Technical University Dresden in 2006, where he worked in the field of functionalized polysiloxanes. He changed to Berakademie Freiberg and continued working in this field at the Institute of Technical Chemistry with Professor Bertau.

Dr. Michael Katzberg works at ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH (Dortmund, Germany) since 2012. He studied food chemistry and performed a research period at Lund University (Sweden). During his doctorate at the Technical University Dresden (Germany) in the group of Prof. Bertau, Dr. Katzberg worked on several projects dealing with sustainable technologies for the production of bulk and fine chemicals.
