Dass der spanische König Fernando I. 1063 sein Reich unter seinen Kindern aufteilt, soll für alle verhängnisvoll werden. Sancho, der älteste Sohn, will alles für sich und nichts für seine Geschwister: Rücksichtslos nimmt er zuerst García das Königreich Galizien weg, dann beraubt er Alfonso der Herrschaft über León. Ihre Schwester Urraca aber (die "Infantin Elster"), hängt an Alfonso mit einer Zuneigung, die über Geschwisterliebe hinausgeht, und verhilft ihm zur Flucht aus dem Gefängnis und dem Kloster, wohin ihn Sancho verbannt hat. Als Sancho mit seinen Truppen zur Belagerung ihrer Stadt Zamora heranrückt und Rodrigo Díaz, genannt El Cid, als Unterhändler ihr die Forderung überbringt, ihrem Bruder die Stadt auszuliefern, lehnt sie empört ab. Die Belagerung zieht sich über ein halbes Jahr hin und zehrt an den Kräften der Eingeschlossenen. Da erscheint El Cid ein zweites Mal, diesmal um sich ganz in den Dienst von Urraca, seiner Jugendliebe, zu stellen. Die beiden, die ihre Liebe zueinander nicht mehr verbergen, sinnen über einen Ausweg aus der aussichtslos erscheinenden Lage nach. Dieser Ausweg wird zur Ermordung Sanchos führen und sowohl Urraca wie auch Rodrigo Díaz für den Rest ihres Lebens belasten... Mit verblüffender Offenheit enthüllt die Infantin dies alles in einem autobiografischen Bericht, den die Historikerin Lidia Pidal neunhundert Jahre später in einem spanischen Kloster aufstöbert. Urraca und ihr Geliebter El Cid stehen durch diese Enthüllungen in einem völlig neuen Licht da: Er, der nicht immer so edle Ritter, gerät durch die Verwicklung in die Mordgeschichte in Zwiespalt mit seinem neuen Herrn Alfonso VI., was erst die spätere (weitgehend unhistorische) Legendenbildung möglich macht. Die in ihren Widersprüchen gefangene Infantin Elster aber wird vor dem Hintergrund der unerbittlichen Machtkämpfe im von den Männern dominierten mittelalterlichen Spanien als Emblem der unbeirrten und selbstbewussten Kämpferin sozusagen rehabilitiert.
