Um dieses Ziel, motivierte Mitarbeiter mit hohem Engagement, zu erreichen, ist es wiederrum eine wichtige Aufgabe des Personalmanage-ments und im Speziellen eine Forschungsaufgabe der Wirtschaftspsychologie, Fakten, Ansätze und Theorien offenzulegen, wie Führungskräfte ihre Mitarbeiter zu Höchstleistungen bringen können. Die Arbeit hat für die meisten Menschen eine grundlegende Bedeutung. Viele Menschen erwarten ebenso von ihrem Beruf, sich damit weiterentwickeln zu können und Bestätigung zu finden. Dieses Thema wird in den letzten Jahren immer mehr diskutiert, jedoch bleibt ein wesentlicher Faktor bei all diesen Bemühungen meist unberücksichtigt, die Mitarbeiter in der "inneren Kündigung". Experten sprechen von Arbeitskräften, welche sich aus vielfältigen Gründen im Arbeitsalltag nicht mehr engagieren wollen und als Minimalisten arbeiten. Obwohl das Phänomen innere Kündigung seit über 30 Jahren bekannt ist, erhält dieses Thema in der Öffentlichkeit nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Löhnert beschreibt, dass trotz erheblicher finanziellen Schäden für die Unternehmungen, als auch gesundheitlicher Schäden für die innerlich gekündigten Personen, dieses Problem nur von wenigen Firmen gezielt angegangen und bewältigt wird.
