Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Überlegungen zu interaktiven Informations- und Unterhaltungsangeboten werden nicht erst seit der Digitalisierung des Rundfunks oder der Entwicklung immer leistungsfähiger Infrastrukturen und Übertragungssystemen der jüngsten Vergangenheit angestellt. Bereits in den sechziger Jahren wurde in den USA der Gedanke eines Rückkanals für das Fernsehen aufgeworfen. Der unidirektionale Charakter dieses Mediums sollte aufgebrochen und in ein Zwei-Wege-Fernsehen umfunktioniert werden. Die Ursache für diese Überlegungen lag in der seit Ende der vierziger Jahren begonnen Einführung und Ausbau der Fernsehkabelnetze in den USA und die darin gesehenen Möglichkeiten für interaktive Anwendungen. Auch in Deutschland wurden zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre erste Tests mit Rückkanälen durchgeführt, die jedoch nur unter Laborbedingungen stattfanden. Um ein Zwei-Wege-Fernsehen massenhaft einzuführen, fehlten vor allem die notwendigen Infrastrukturen, die mit erheblichen finanziellen Mitteln hätten aufgerüstet werden müssen. Die Beteiligung des Zuschauers am Fernsehprogramm ist allerdings nicht nur mittels Rückkanal realisierbar. Seit den Anfängen des Fernsehens gab es immer wieder Konzepte, den Zuschauer aus seiner passiven Rolle herauszulocken und aktiv am Programmgeschehen teilhaben zu lassen. Durch die Verbindung von Fernsehen und Telefon waren bereits sehr früh Interaktionen auf niedrigem Niveau möglich. Die erste Unterhaltungsshow in dieser Richtung im deutschen Fernsehen war die Sendung „Der Goldene Schuss". Die Zuschauer konnten mittels Kommandos über das Telefon die Ausrichtung einer Armbrust steuern. In den achtziger Jahren wurde dann eine Methode für Abstimmungen im Fernsehen über das Telefon entwickelt. Das wohl bekannteste Beispiel ist die Wahl des Wettkönigs bei der Sendung „Wetten dass..." durch die Anrufe der Zuschauer. Die Rede ist vom TED.
