About the Book

English summary: Alone on an island: Daniel Defoe's world famous novel of 1719 is still relevant and thought provoking regarding intrapsychic processes and the social dimension of intersubjectivity. The essays in this volume that emerged from the annual conference of the German Society for Individual Psychology (DGIP) 2009 in Mainz, Germany, reflect intersubjective events in relationships and their meaning in psychotherapeutic context. Using the novel Robinson Crusoe as reference intrapsychic processes under the conditions of (intended or unintended) isolation are examined. Alfred Adler, forerunner in interpersonal psychoanalysis, examined mainly social conditions of humans in his theoretical works and stressed the sense for others as indispensible for personal development, for the individuation. The contributions for this volume discuss intersubjective events under historic-literary, intrapsychic, pedagogic, therapeutic and psychoanalytic aspects and link them to reflections on meaning of seperation, isolation and self-awareness, a topic central to Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe.
