About the Book

I present the fourth volume of the series entitled Introduction to Thomistic Metaphysics. In this book, I study two fundamental topics: the doctrine of Analogy and Categories. Aristotle was the first philosopher to apply analogy (of mathematical origin) to Metaphysics, thus achieving important epistemological advances. This development enabled Heidegger to claim that Aristotle had placed Metaphysics on a fundamentally new basis compared with Platonism. The analogy is the method of knowledge that allowed Aquinas to ascend to the supernatural order from human reason and to investigate its mysteries. In it, he was far ahead of Aristotle, who could not get beyond Being-in-entity: St. Thomas masterfully advanced to God by analogy and identified Being-in-itself, subsistent Being in God Himself, who is not an entity. Concerning Categories, we develop the study of substance and predicamental accidents. The close entity-substance relationship taught by the Stagirite, even to the point of fully identifying the entity with the first substance, will find in St. Thomas the contribution of his original vision: it is the act of being or existing (esse) that actualizes the substantial essence by perfecting it, giving it existence and enabling it to abandon extramental being to be something in concrete reality. Thus Aquinas moves beyond Aristotle's essentialist Metaphysics to existential Metaphysics, that of the essence existing in concrete reality. I omitted a Prologue, considering it superfluous. I began directly with the arguments, divided into 17 chapters, as follows: 1-What is the analogy? 2-The analogy of attribution. 3-The analogy of proportionality. 4-The analogy of inequality. 5-The properties of analogy. 6-The analogical knowledge. 7-The analogical notion of Being and Entity. 8-The categories. 9-The substance (I). 10-The substance (II). 11-The accidents. 12-The quantity. 13-The principle of individuation. 14-The quality. 15-The Relation. 16-Other accidents. 17-The Human Person. Finally, an epilogue in the form of question-answers and Notes. As usual, I have added numerous quotations and references to distinguished authors.
