L'âme humaine est la plus basse des substances séparées. Parmi les entités créées, elle est placée dans une catégorie intermédiaire entre les substances corporelles supérieures et les substances angéliques inférieures. Ce n'est pas parce qu'il est un corps, mais parce que sa nature spécifique exige un corps. Elle n'est pas prisonnière du corps. Au contraire: c'est la forme du corps. Il est donc impossible de réfléchir sur l'âme sans réfléchir sur le corps auquel elle donne vie. L'âme ne peut atteindre sa fin sans un corps. Il a besoin de ses organes pour accomplir les opérations végétatives, sensitives et intellectuelles requises par l'être humain. Sauf une: celle de comprendre l'essence des entités. Pour cette opération spécifique et d'autres qui lui sont liées (formation des espèces intelligibles, mise en action de l'intellect passif et élaboration de concepts universels), il n'a besoin d'aucun organe corporel. Elle se suffit à elle-même. En tant que forme pure qu'elle est, l´âme subsiste le corps. Elle est incorruptible et continue à comprendre et à connaître une fois séparée du corps. Lorsque le corps ne possède plus les dispositions adéquates aux opérations de l'âme, celle-ci, en tant que forme subsistante, se sépare. Le corps ne peut plus être appelé ainsi, sauf de manière équivoque. L'ouvrage se compose de dix chapitres. A savoir: 1-Qu'est-ce que l'âme ? 2-L'origine de l'âme. 3-L'union de l'âme et du corps. 4-Les puissances de l'âme en général. 5-Les puissances intellectives de l'âme. 6-Les puissances appétitives de l'âme. 7-L'âme et le libre arbitre. 8-La connaissance des entités corporelles. 9-La connaissance des entités incorporelles. 10-Concepts fondamentaux sur l'âme. Suit un épilogue, caractéristique de ces volumes, basé sur des questions et des réponses. Et d'abondantes notes, principalement tirées de la Somme Théologique et des Questions disputées de l'âme.
