About the Book

English summary: Between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, Native American spiritual leaders and elites developed techniques to transmit their ceremonial discourse. Pierre Deleage compares side by side these various writing systems that differed profoundly from those more familiar to us. He argues by extension that all writing systems were destined to transcribe ritual discourses into institutional frameworks that organized their transmission. The greater question addressed in this work is why did humans on so many occasions invest the immense intellectual effort needed to invent writing.
