The idea of the present research work on 'Investment Portfolio of Life Insurance
Corporation of India (LICI) and Select Private Life Insurance Companies' has been
developed out of the lively discussion with my respected research mentor, Professor
(Dr.) Siddhartha Sankar Saha, Professor of Commerce, Department of Commerce,
University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. Development of the life insurance industry,
which is an important part of the financial system, accelerates capital accumulation
and leads the domestic savings into sector-wise investment in Indian economy. In
fact, life insurance companies in India are very important financial institutions for
mobilization of the savings of people in different investment sectors of the economy
and play a significant role to mobilize funds from surplus sectors to deficit sectors
for the productive purposes. At present, one public and twenty three private life
insurance companies are operating in India. The IRDA regulates the life insurance
companies and their investment portfolio. In this backdrop, this is significant to
analyse the investment portfolio of public and select private life insurance in India.
