About the Book

Involuntary Racism was inspired by the on-going crisis regarding racism and immigration in Italy. While addressing serious social concerns, the author, Joanna Martin, writes in a relaxed tone with a hint of sarcasm. Laughter can be disarming and discussions about racism often stimulate unproductive defensive posturing. Martin's light-hearted approach to a very serious topic is a diversion from the style of many academic texts, which seemingly create barriers and scold. Involuntary Racism is succinct and direct, but it is also a barrel of laughs. You'll find chapters like ITALIANS DO IT BEST, GOOD INTENTIONS, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, ODE TO MY FAMILY, and "THEM" AGAINST "US". In these chapters, Martin shares shocking and funny situations, explores her own racism, makes some predictions about the future of immigration in Italy, describes various types of racism, offers some practical advice, praises her Italian and American families, and even plays a game with readers. Involuntary Racism offers a critique based solely on Martin's personal opinions and experiences. It is in no way intended to offend or attack. Her purpose in writing Involuntary Racism was dual. First, she was searching for an outlet to express her feelings after many years of traveling and living in Italy as a woman of African descent. Second, she wanted to provoke introspective thought in the hopes of promoting positive change. The first has been accomplished, but the latter still remains to be seen.
About the Author: Joanna Martin is an African-American woman born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She has a B.A. in Modern Languages and Linguistics, an M.A. in Intercultural Communication and a CTEFL. Her love affair with Italy began on a high school exchange in 1992. After many trips back and forth "across the pond", Martin moved to Italy and lived there for over five years before returning to the U.S. She currently works as an interpreter/translator and handles international relations for a Siena-based business.
