Voici sans doute, par son sujet, sous les dehors austeres d'une compilation de fiches diverses, un des grands livres des Etymologies, un des sommets de l'entreprise encyclopedique isidorienne. Car c'est bien un abrege de theologie--moins developpe, certes, que le premier livre des Sententiae avec lequel il a un certain nombre de passages paralleles--qu'entend ici presenter l'eveque de Seville. Et cela, sans doute, non sans une originalite certaine, qui se cache sous l'aspect documentaire du texte.Le classement hierarchise des notices impose un parcours qui va du plus haut au plus bas, du plus ancien au plus recent, de Dieu a l'homme contemporain en passant par les anges, les saints, les patriarches, les prophetes, les martyrs et la societe ecclesiale: dans le manuel ecrit par Isidore circule un invisible et mysterieux courant qui s'alimente a la pensee des Peres et qui, au dela de l'Histoire sainte, deroule sous nos yeux toute une fresque de l'histoire humaine. Apres un groupe de livres initiaux qui traitaient des sciences consacrees par l'Antiquite (grammaire, rhetorique, dialectique, sciences mathematiques, medecine, droita), les livres VI-VII-VIII (le VIII sera consacre a l'Eglise), vers la fin de la premiere decade des Etymologies, dispensent un enseignement qui touche de maniere plus specifique aux questions du christianisme, des textes et des representations religieuses. La seconde decade reviendra a l'encyclopedie technique et scientifique (l'homme, les animaux, les pierres et les metaux, etc.). Les livres religieux occupent donc une position quasi centrale dans l'encyclopedie isidorienne, et le livre VII, en particulier, doit etre compare avec le livre I des Sententiae. Dans les Etymologies VII comme dans les Sententiae, Isidore assume la fonction d'enseignement qui incombe a sa charge d'eveque.
