About the Book

Alfred Salmony (1890-1958) war in der Zeit der Weimarer Republik von 1922 bis 1933 der erste wissenschaftliche Assistent und ab 1925 der erste stellvertretende Direktor des Museums fur Ostasiatische Kunst Koln. Mit seinen ca. 200 Erwerbungen im Bereich der fruhchinesischen Kunst pragte er die Sammlung des Hauses, initiierte bedeutende Ausstellungen und kampfte fur eine Gleichstellung der ostasiatischen und der europaischen Kunst. 1925 grundete er die weltweit bekannte Fachzeitschrift Artibus Asiae. 1933 musste Salmony vor dem nationalsozialistischen Regime uber Frankreich nach Amerika fliehen. Er unterrichtete bis zu seinem Tod 1958 am renommierten Institute of Fine Arts in New York und pragte die Entwicklung des Faches der Ostasiatischen Kunstgeschichte entscheidend mit. Bis heute zahlt er in Amerika zu den bekanntesten fruhen Wissenschaftlern auf diesem Gebiet. Die deutsch-englische Monographie begleitet die gleichnamige Ausstellung (8.5.-3.11.2024) im Museum fur Ostasiatische Kunst Koln und illustriert mit ca. 100 grosstenteils farbigen Abbildungen die fur das Haus angekauften fruhchinesischen Jaden, Bronzegefasse, Keramiken und sino-sibirischen Metallarbeiten ebenso wie die von Salmony zum ersten Mal bearbeiteten chinesischen buddhistischen Skulpturen. Inventarlisten, Briefe und Publikationen geben nicht nur zum ersten Mal einen Einblick in den Werdegang eines bedeutenden Wissenschaftlers, sondern verschaffen einen Einblick in den Kunstmarkt, die Anschaffungsmethoden und die Sammlungsgeschichte der damaligen Zeit.
