Von der Utopie der modernen Stadt zu den Problemen einer wuchernden Metropole. Vor fünfzig Jahren erbaut, wurde Brasília nach Salvador (1549 bis 1763) und Rio de Janeiro (1763 bis 1960) die dritte Hauptstadt Brasiliens, das sich neu erfinden wollte. Eines Landes, das mit seiner Vergangenheit als portugiesische Kolonie (1500 bis 1822) radi¬kal brechen und nur in die Zukunft blicken wollte. So wurde dem Architekten und Stadtplaner Lúcio Costa 1957 die Aufgabe erteilt, Brasília als Aushängeschild dieses Musterlandes zu bauen, und zwar inmitten von Nichts. Dort, wo es bis dato nur Savanne und Rinder-Farmen gab. Um den hohen Erwartungen der politischen und kulturellen Elite, Rechnung zu tragen, wandte Costa Prinzipien an, die jede Spur einer traditionellen Stadt tilgen sollten: weg mit der Verschachtelung des Stadtgewebes und den engen Straßen und Gassen, her mit großzügigen Abständen zwischen Wohnhäusern, ausgefüllt mit Grünanlagen. Her mit der Stadt als Park - einem lange gehegten und nie verwirklichten Traum des modernen Städtebaus. Heute kämpft Brasilia gegen die Herausforderungen einer wachsenden Metropole - Überbevölkerung, Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit und Umweltverschmutzung. Was hat sich seit Costas Credo "die Stadt als Park" getan? Wie versucht die Hauptstadt mit den Folgen des ungehinderten Wachstums um zu gehen und welche Stellung hatten die Grünflächen während der letzten 50 Jahre und heute?
