About the Book

Two enemies, a Japanese scientist's wife and a Chinese peasant woman, were drawn together in an unusual situation during the Sino-Japanese war (1937-1945). Their daughters grew up together and became inseparable. When the war ended, all Japanese were repatriated back to Japan. Not wanting to subject an innocent child to the unknown harsh life of a post-war Japan, the young scientist couple left their daughter in China to be cared for by the Chinese peasant. As soon as the relationship between China and the United States returned to normal, this Japanese couple returned to China to look for their long-lost daughter. This is a story about conflicting emotions: friendship and animosity, love and hatred, kindness and cruelty, trust and betrayal.
About the Author: Paul Chow Born in Beijing on August 1, 1926 Paul Chow grew up in the family of a government railroad manager whose assignments were being switched frequently from one railroad line to another. As a result, he attended fourteen different schools throughout China for his eleven years of primary and secondary education. During WWII, Chow quit school to join the Allied Forces in fighting against the Japanese invading forces in Burma. After the war, he took up fishing and stayed at sea for nine years. In 1955, he entered a Chinese sailing junk in a trans-Atlantic yacht race. Without any experience in sailboats, he set out to cross the oceans with five of his friends. Having gone through a foul start, a typhoon on the China Sea and a strong gale along the coast of Japan, they arrived late in San Francisco and missed the race. At the age of 29, Chow went back to school and took up physics at University of California at Berkeley. Ten years later, he obtained a PhD degree from Northwestern University and went into teaching for the next 29 years. After retirement, Chow has devoted his time in writing. His work includes three novels, two biographies, two journeys and one physics book for non-science readers.
