Jacques Cartier est l'un de ces explorateurs européens partis d'Espagne, du Portugal, d'Angleterre et de France au XVIe et au XVIIe siècles, principalement pour découvrir un passage vers la Chine mythique. Cartier est devenu l'un des découvreurs d'un nouveau monde, immense continent qui barrait le chemin aux navigateurs: les Amériques. En explorateur méticuleux, il a inventorié un vaste territoire s'étendant du golfe du Saint-Laurent jusqu'au site d'Hochelaga, devenu Montréal, et il a attribué ce territoire au roi de France. Il n'est toutefois pas parvenu à fonder une colonie durable. Les premiers historiens du Canada français l'ont proclamé découvreur du Canada au XIXe siècle, car Jacques Cartier servait très bien les intérêts nationalistes émergents. L'histoire Les faits historiques concernant Jacques Cartier, ce grand marin malouin, sont désormais bien connus et ils ne concordent pas toujours avec la représentation construite à son sujet. Comme les rois des autres puissances européennes, François Ier (1494-1547) cherche en Amérique le passage vers l'Orient mythique. Giovanni da Verrazano ayant échoué dans cette quête, Jean Le Veneur, grand aumônier de France et abbé du Mont-Saint-Michel, conseille à son roi qui y est en pèlerinage de confier une nouvelle expédition à l'un des membres de sa famille: l'expérimenté pilote malouin Jacques Cartier. Ce dernier est né en 1491 dans la maison familiale sise non loin de Saint-Malo, à Limoëlou, nom par la suite donné à un arrondissement de la ville de Québec. Une fois devenu capitaine, Cartier a participé à des expéditions sur la côte américaine au Brésil, et a également connu des pêcheurs qui fréquentent les Grands Bancs de Terre-Neuve. Cet homme est donc fort bien préparé à partir à la recherche du convoité passage du Nord-Ouest qui mènerait à la Chine Aller à navigation, rechercher Henri-Émile Chevalier, né le 13 septembre 1828 à Châtillon-sur-Seine, mort le 26 août 1879 à Paris, est un homme de lettres français. Ayant porté les armes, Chevalier dut s'exiler à la suite du coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851, et séjourna en cette qualité aux États-Unis, où il a donné des feuilletons dans le Courrier des États-Unis, à Montréal où il a écrit dans des journaux démocratiques et occupé le poste de bibliothécaire de l'Institut Canadien. Pendant son séjour en Amérique, il a publié un grand nombre de romans édités à Montréal et plusieurs ouvrages sur la Géologie américaine. Il a traduit de l'anglais le Foyer canadien, de Knot, publié l'Art de la beauté paru sous le nom de Lola Montez, et donné une nouvelle édition de l'Histoire du Canada, du frère Gabriel Sagard-Théodat. Il a aussi dirigé la Chasse illustrée. Ayant accepté l'amnistie en 1860, il écrivit des nouvelles dans des journaux, comme le Pays et L'Opinion nationale, et des séries de romans sur les Amérindiens. Il a pris place au Conseil municipal de Paris et a fini par un enterrement civil.
