Jacques Handschin (1886-1955) zahlt zu den bedeutendsten und originellsten Musikwissenschaftlern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein wissenschaftliches Wirken zeichnet sich durch weitgestreute Schwerpunkte sowohl in der Mediaevistik als auch in der musikalischen Moderne, im Bereich der Musikgeschichte wie jenem der Musikpsychologie und anderen Gebieten aus. Von 1935 bis zu seinem Tod wirkte er als Ordinarius fur Musikwissenschaft an der Universitat Basel. Handschin hatte nie Musikwissenschaft studiert, sondern eine fundierte Ausbildung bei den fuhrenden Organisten seiner Zeit genossen (bei Max Reger in Munchen, bei Karl Straube in Leipzig und bei Charles-Marie Widor in Paris). 1909 wurde er als Orgellehrer an das Konservatorium in St. Petersburg berufen, wo er bis 1920 - also bis in die ersten Revolutionsjahre - als Lehrer und Interpret wirkte. Im Fruhjahr 1920 ubersiedelte er in die Schweiz und begann neben seiner Tatigkeit als Organist eine steile wissenschaftliche Karriere. Erst vor kurzem konnte Janna Kniazeva eine umfangreiche journalistische Tatigkeit Handschins in St. Petersburg nachweisen, vor allem mit Konzertberichten und Rezensionen. Dabei zeigt sich Handschin als ausserst wacher und kluger Beobachter der Musik und des Musiklebens seiner Zeit in einer europaischen Metropole. Seine vom Anlass her oftmals tagesaktuellen Texte spiegeln aber nicht nur eine aufregende Phase der Moderne. Sie erlauben auch einen Blick auf einen bislang unbekannten Aspekt in der intellektuellen Biographie dieses aussergewohnlichen Gelehrten, ja dessen eigentliche Genese. Der Edition dieser bislang unbekannten Texte geht eine ausfuhrliche Einleitung voraus, in der Janna Kniazeva den bisher nur in Umrissen bekannten Werdegang Handschins und seine Zeit in St. Petersburg nachzeichnet und das kulturelle Umfeld beschreibt, in dem die Texte zu situieren sind.
About the Author: Die Herausgeberin Janna Kniazeva ist Musikwissenschaftlerin in St. Petersburg, wo sie als Mitarbeiterin in der Musikabteilung des Instituts fur Kunstgeschichte tatig ist.
