About the Book

Jacob Blake is a forty year old, single, narcissistic, womanizer, with a great job, no woman or children to complicate his partying lifestyle; life is simple and the world is his oyster. That was yesterday...now he is unemployed and everything he thought he knew, turns out to be a lie... The company he worked for, Garrisons and Sons, now seized by the government because of a PONZI scheme, has shut its doors. After fifteen years as one of their top accountants, his life seems to have come to an abrupt halt. At least in his mind. After a couple of weeks of doing nothing but feeling sorry himself, Jake realizes he needs to quit the pity party (not the kind he was used to attending) and get himself motivated again. Showered, shaved, and stomach hungry, Jake decides to visit an old restaurant he hadn't eaten in for over a year. A place he remembered fondly for its grease laden fare and an extremely buxom blonde; both of which he found appetizing after a hard night of partying. To his delight, the food was the same, but to his disappointment, the woman with the cleavage no longer worked there. The stupidity of marriage and having a child had taken her away. He disliked children, but disliked the idea of love or marriage even more. He now had to settle for a young, skinny, albeit slightly cute, waitress. She was friendly, but more talkative than Jake normally tolerated, although he found himself not minding her chatter. Along with meeting Gina, the waitress, he is approached by Bob Mason, an elderly, disheveled man that smelled as if he had used Grey Goose for mouthwash, offering him a newspaper. Jake soon finds out Bob is a part of his past; his seedier past, with the possibility that not only might he have inadvertently caused the man to lose his job because he had turned a blind eye to what was happening within the company he worked for, ultimately leading to the loss of hundreds of jobs, including Bob's; but there was an even greater possibility he had destroyed the man's marriage by sleeping with his wife three years prior. He decides a new start is what he needs--sell his house and get out of suburb hell, get away from Bob, and the guilt that seemed to be cropping up from some unknown chasm in a soul he wasn't sure, until that point, he had. Feeling better about things after making these decisions, Jake contacts the realty company only to find out, Carolyn, Bob's ex-wife, the woman he had the affair with, owns the realty company. The guilt feeling is now intense enough that Jake decides to take an offer with Ryan, his mother's husband, his step-father (a step-father he finds distasteful and untrustworthy), of running a newly acquired company and then offer Bob a job-a way to appease the guilt monster now residing in his mind, plus help Bob since he feels partially responsible for the man's life being turned upside down. The pieces to the messed up puzzle of his life could then be easily put back together. Soon, however, Jacob remembers why he hates puzzles. Carolyn leaves him a frantic message on his cell phone after he is out for the day, saying her ex husband has gone to his house looking for him; he is drunk, and possibly armed. Jake sneaks in the back door in hopes of catching the ex unaware and, with any luck, not get his butt shot, but ends up tripping over an already dead body in the middle of his living room, knocking himself out cold. Once he comes to, he realizes the bloodstain on the carpet will drastically drop the resell value of his house, and he is in need of an ambulance; and possibly an alibi...
