Fragen zu ihrer Funktionalität und Medialität., Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die neuen Entdeckungen und Errungenschaften der niederländischen Meister zu Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts machten fast überall in Europa einen tiefen Eindruck. Künstler wie Auftraggeber waren von der Idee hingerissen, dass sich die Kunst nicht nur dazu verwenden ließ, die heiligen Geschichten packend nachzuerzählen, sondern dass man damit auch ein Stück Welt spiegeln konnte. Die erste Folge dieser gewaltigen Umwälzung war, wie man am Beispiel Jan van Eycks Heiligen Barbara sehen kann, dass Künstler allerorts zu experimentieren und nach neuen überraschenden Wirkungen zu suchen begannen. Diese Abenteuerlust, dieser kühne Geist der Neuerung, von dem die Kunst im 15. Jahrhundert ergriffen wurde, markiert den eigentlichen Bruch mit dem Mittelalter . Die neue Impulse fanden auch ihren Einfluss auf die Kunst Jan van Eycks. Aus den Werken Jan van Eycks spricht eine damals neue Weltanschauung, die diesseitigen Erscheinungen einen Sinn zuordnete und die Schilderung der neuen Welt in die Bilder einbezog. Er wird als Neuerer der sogenannten altniederländischen Tafelmalerei und ihres spezifischen Realismus angesehen. Jan van Eycks Heilige Barbara könnte man auch als Experiment verstehen. Der neue Van Eyck ist hier der Erzähler, der auf der Suche nach eigenen Sprachformen für das Medium Tafelbild ist. Sein konsequenter Naturalismus markiert ein qualitativ neues, seit der Gotik entstehendes Wirklichkeitsverhältnis faszinierender Erscheinungstreue. Sie äußert sich in der Exaktheit der Darstellung, in der Schilderung einer Landschaft, die bis in den fernsten Hintergrund in allen Einzelheiten erfasst ist. Angesichts der bereits zum Rang einer Wissenschaft aufgestiegenen Architektur lag es für Van Eyck nahe,
