Die Reise in der Prometheus geht weiter. Der Kontakt zum Planeten Maa ist mittlerweile abgerissen und die Erde noch lange nicht in Sicht. Um das Leben an Bord erträglicher zu machen, wird für die Schülerinnen und Schüler ein Wettbewerb veranstaltet. Als erster Preis winkt die Landung auf einem fremden Planeten. Doch während Jala alles daran setzt, mit ihrem Team zu siegen, verliebt sich Jannis in June Farrow aus der Ardeshir-Klasse und findet neue Freunde, die aus dem Medizinlager Morelight forte gestohlen haben. Das Psychopharmakon war von den Humanökologen für die schwierige Phase der Leerzeit gedacht, wird jedoch von Thelonious Arden unter Verschluss gehalten. Jannis' zunehmende Drogensucht und seine Auseinandersetzungen mit Damion Dagwood, dem Freund von June, wird mehr und mehr zur Belastungsprobe seiner Freundschaft mit Jala, Alice, Sergej und Hiroto. Doch noch weitaus größere Probleme bereitet schon bald der fremde Planet, der ein Bakterium beherbergt, das Halluzinationen hervorruft. Professor Sterling kann es nicht lassen, Proben dieses Bakteriums auf der Prometheus zu analysieren, und bringt dadurch die gesamte Besatzung an Bord in Lebensgefahr. Selbst der Dronka Donovan bleibt nicht unempfänglich für das neue Bakterium. Währenddessen gelingt es Jala, herauszufinden, dass die Kommandantin einen geheimen Auftrag befolgt und die Prometheus zu einem nicht auf der Route liegenden Feld steuern möchte, in dem sie die überaus wertvollen Überbleibsel einer Neutronenstern-Kollision vermutet. Während Jorge Stankow und Roberto Rammon Damion Dagwood für ihren Rachefeldzug gegen die Humanökologen zu gewinnen versuchen, erklärt Thelonious Arden Jannis, was es mit dem geheimnisvollen Poetikon auf sich hat, und er entschließt sich, den Kindern die von den Humanökologen verbotene Handschrift zu lehren. "Tiefgründiges Zukunftsabenteuer, liebenswerte junge Helden und eine große Portion Satire sind die Zutaten für diese temporeiche und ungewöhnliche Coming-of-Age-Geschichte.
