About the Book

The values of Japanese culture place a high value on hard labor and social harmony. Japanese culture was comparable to Chinese culture until the tenth century, when the Heian Period saw the birth of the samurai, and the Edo Period brought about social transformation due to isolation. All things considered, Buddhism, Confucianism, the local Shinto faith, and the scarcity of natural resources had an impact on the culture. Even though Japanese culture has recently been more Westernized, Japanese people still go to great lengths to protect their rich cultural legacy, as evidenced by their early study of traditional arts and crafts, participation in tea ceremonies, and donning kimonos. Japanese folks are incredibly humble and modest. Individuals frequently bow to say, "I am not superior to you." You have my respect. Respect is shown by bending at a greater angle and for a longer duration. Furthermore, Japanese individuals practice both Buddhism and Shintoism concurrently. Japanese customs dictate that a funeral is held at a Buddhist temple and that a Shinto shrine is the site of the ceremony for the birth of a child. Finally, it should be noted that Japanese culture places a high value on cleanliness: guests wear shoes off of their homes and take daily baths. The fact that there are no garbage cans in public spaces and everything is still clean surprises a lot of visitors. Japan is a conformist society that values peace, respect for one another, and consensus within the group. In actuality, the demand for social peace is what leads to other virtues like cooperation, diligence, and avoiding conflict. Common Japanese values are influenced by Japanese religion as well. While perfectionism and minimalism are derived from Zen Buddhism, purity and cleanliness are derived from Shintoism. Furthermore, the culture of Japan might have been impacted by the introduction of East Asian teachings. Confucianism is credited for inspiring the virtues of long-term planning, tenacity, deference to authority, and consideration for the old.
