Dieses Bild vermitteln amerikanische Kriegsfilme, die bis 1945 entstanden - manche mehr, manche weniger deutlich. Der Propagandanutzen ist zumeist unübersehbar. Ein einseitiges und stereotypes Feindbild erfüllt in Kriegszeiten elementare Funktionen, von denen die wohl wichtigste darin besteht, die Tötungshemmung der Soldaten überwinden zu helfen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll untersucht werden, wie sich die Darstellung des japanischen Feindes im amerikanischen Kriegsfilm seit den 40er Jahren verändert hat. Um diese Entwicklung aufzuzeigen, werden exemplarisch zehn Filme herangezogen, die in der Darstellung des japanischen Feindes entweder typisch für ihre Zeit sind oder sich in bestimmten Aspekten von ihren Vorgängern respektive Nachfolgern abheben. Mit den 40er und 60er Jahren sowie mit Pazifikkriegsfilmen der Gegenwart sollen drei Zeitebenen betrachtet und kontrastiert werden. Die Filmauswahl erhebt dabei keinen Anspruch auf Repräsentativität, vielmehr sollen Tendenzen in der Charakterisierung der Japaner herausgearbeitet werden. Obwohl die Filme gleichberechtigt nebeneinander stehen, liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den Werken der 40er Jahre, da sie den Ausgangspunkt für die weitere Entwicklung des Subgenres bilden und auch gegenwärtig Pazifikkriegsfilme im Vergleich mit und in Abgrenzung von ihnen rezipiert werden. Um die Filme thematisch zuordnen zu können, wird einleitend zunächst auf die japanisch-amerikanischen Beziehungen vor dem Angriff auf Pearl Harbor und die Auswirkungen der Bombardierung eingegangen. Der Abschnitt ist im Gesamtkontext sehr wichtig, da mit diesem Hintergrundwissen der sich vor allem in Filmen der 40er Jahre manifestieren
