About the Book

Jazz Mikrokosmos is an anthology of 160 pieces in six volumes intended to stimulate students' interest in jazz music. It is suitable for any level of flute classes from middle schools specialized in music, to higher secondary music schools up to conservatoires. Pupils and teachers can have fun exploring various styles such as blues, boogie-woogie, ragtime, calypso, mambo, bossa nova, jazz waltz, funky and latin rock, which are not often found in the flute ensemble repertoire.
Jazz Mikrokosmos does not consider improvisation for which there are already many handbooks; it is rather a collection of entirely written out pieces that allow students to tackle progressively more difficult pieces, especially from the point of view of rhythm which in jazz is particularly rich and complex. A stimulating challenge for students!
The aspect of timbre is also considered as jazz often uses non-conventional sounds, so studies on blowing techniques, percussive sounds, and the use of the voice and harmonics are included, which are also a good introduction to contemporary music and its notation. Other compositions are dedicated to the modes, intervals, special scales and reinterpretations in jazz style of such classical forms as the canon, fugue or variations on a theme.
The anthology's flute duets, trios and quartets start with simple exercises on syncopation, continue with increasingly more difficult pieces, often suitable for end-of-year recitals, up to the final volumes containing actual concert pieces characterized by very complex polyrhythms. It is also possible to customize the executions, adapting them for flute orchestras by, for instance, doubling the lowest part with bass flutes or adding percussion as desired.
