Akademische Arbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Kunst - Sonstiges, Note: 1,0, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Bedeutung der Gemälde Watteaus wurde tatsächlich schon unter Zeitgenossen als unklar und vielschichtig wahrgenommen und über die Jahrzehnte und Jahrhunderte hinweg hat die Kunstkritik gelernt, diese Ambiguität als wesentliches Merkmal seiner künstlerischen Produktion anzuerkennen. Die neuere Forschung hat jedoch kulturelle Zusammenhänge am Abend des ancien regimes offengelegt, die die Ambiguität in Watteaus OEuvre in ihrer subversiven Intention und Aussagekraft erklären helfen. Im Anschluss an die Arbeiten von Thomas Crow, Julie-Anne Plax, Sarah Cohen und anderen greift die vorliegende Facharbeit diese Spuren für die Analyse von Watteaus Gemälde Pierrot (Gilles) auf. Nach einer ersten Bildbeschreibung bzw. -analyse sollen zunächst die angesprochenen Zusammenhänge näher erläutert werden. Hierbei wird insbesondere auf die Rolle der italienischen Commedia dell´Arte in der französischen Kulturpolitik eingegangen, das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen französischer und italienischer Musik erläutert sowie die Praxis der Maskerade in der Alltagskultur der Zeit vorgestellt. Unter vergleichender Zuhilfenahme des Werkes Les Comédiens italiens ordnet die vorliegende Arbeit daraufhin in einem zweiten Schritt das Gemälde Gilles den in weiteren Kapiteln dargelegten Zusammenhängen zu und versucht so eine Interpretation im Rahmen der zeitgenössischen politischen Spannungsverhältnisse, wobei die dargelegten kulturellen Zusammenhänge eine mehr oder weniger offene Unzufriedenheit mit dem Absolutismus veranschaulichen, die sich ins besondere in der Praxis der Maskerade und in der Rezeption der italienischen Komödie und Musik ausdrückt. In einem dritten Schritt vergleicht die Studie Gilles mit "Le Contrat de mariage", insbesondere in Hinblick auf die Praxis der Maskerade. Die These, die die vorliegende Arbeit insgesamt letztend
