Der Schriftsteller, Historiker und Kirchenkritiker Karlheinz Deschner hat einmal gefragt: "Warum (also) nicht alles metaphysische Gemunkel preisgeben, jeden religiösen und nicht religiösen Absolutheitsanspruch, jede religiöse und nicht religiöse Intoleranz? Warum nicht friedlich und freundlich werden, zum Wissen erziehen, soweit man wissen kann, und zur Liebe - in einem kurzen Leben auf einer änigmatischen Welt?" Beinahe solange wie der Mensch existiert, hat er stattdessen allerlei metaphysisches Gemunkel ersonnen. So glaubt er auch heute noch, wohl mehrheitlich, dass er sein kurzes Leben auf dieser rätselhaften Welt für alle Zeiten in einer jenseitigen weiterleben darf bzw., falls es schlecht gelaufen ist, weiterleben muss. Im Himmel, in der Nähe seines Schöpfergottes, falls er gottgefällig gelebt hat und in der Hölle, fern von Gott, falls sein Leben Gott nicht gefallen hat. Über Himmel und Hölle entscheidet das Gottesgericht nach dem Tod eines jeden Men-schen. Klaus Becker findet es mehr als erstaunlich, dass ein großer Teil der Menschheit diesen und vergleichbar abstrusen Ideen auch heute noch nachhängen kann. Er beschreibt seine Sicht auf das nicht vermeidbare Ende, auf das Ende der Menschheit und das unseres Planeten. Und er stellt Fragen, die damit im Zusammenhang stehen: Warum existiert die Welt? Warum sind wir Menschen auf der Welt? Unterliegt unser Dasein einem göttlichen Plan? Gibt es einen persönlichen Gott? Und warum lässt der allmächtige und allgütige Gott, falls er denn existiert, das Leid in der Welt zu? Oder ist alles viel einfacher? Der Autor kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass alles viel weniger kompliziert ist und die Welt und alle Kreaturen in ihr ein natürliches Produkt der Evolution sind.
