Als die Burg Schattenfels bei einem Erdbeben einstürzte, überlebte nur Jinny, ein süßes Kätzchen, diese Katastrophe. Einsam und traurig blieb sie in der Ruine zurück. Die einzige Abwechslung boten drei Geister, die jede Nacht dasselbe Theaterstück aufführten, und Kuno, eine nervige Maus. So langweilte sich Jinny fast zu Tode, bis sie eines Nachts einen geheimnisvollen Schatten entdeckte: Douglas von und zu Flederwisch, eine elegante Fledermaus adeliger Abstammung mit Frack und Masche. Für Jinny war es Liebe auf den ersten Blick! Was sie nicht wusste: Douglas war in Wirklichkeit ein Hochstapler und Dieb, der auf der Flucht vor der Mäusepolizei in dieser verlassenen Ruine untertauchen wollte, bis die Fahndung nach ihm eingestellt würde. Für den galanten Frauenheld zählten nur Damen mit Reichtümern und Schätzen. Jinny dagegen betrachtete er als armen Bauerntrampel. Als sie ihm ihre Liebe gestand, merkte er sofort, dass er sie irgendwie loswerden musste. So reifte in ihm ein teuflischer Plan: Er versprach Jinny, dass er sie lieben werde, aber nur, wenn sie fliegen lerne und ihm somit ebenbürtig sei. Insgeheim hoffte er, sie werde sich den Hals brechen, doch Jinny entpuppte sich als Kämpferin und zog aus, um bei den Vögeln das Fliegen zu lernen. Begleitet von Kuno, der sich in der Not als wahrer Freund entpuppte, fanden die beiden überall Hilfe. Egal, ob Frösche, Mäuse oder Vögel, alle empfanden Mitleid mit Jinny, als sie ihre Geschichte hörten, auch wenn sie insgeheim dachten: "Kätzchen, du hast vielleicht einen Vogel, wirst aber nie einer sein." Schließlich kamen die beiden nach Kohlmeisenhausen, wo sie die drei Geister wiedertrafen, die Douglas aus der Burg hinausgeekelt hatte. Inzwischen hatte die Mäusepolizei allerdings sein Versteck entdeckt und stand kurz davor, ihm das Handwerk zu legen. Da beschloss Jinny, zusammen mit ihren neugewonnenen Freunden auf die Burg Schattenfels zurückzukehren. Würde sie das Unmögliche schaffen und als Flugpionierin den ersten Nicht-Vogelflug der Geschichte erfolgreich meistern?
