About the Book

Johann August Sack schlug ab 1785 die Verwaltungslaufbahn ein und arbeitete als Auskultator bei der Regierung in Kleve. Hier beschäftigte er sich vor allem mit dem Berg- und Hüttenwesen. 1788 wurde er zum Bergrat und Bergrichter in Wetter ernannt. Als Justiziar der Kriegs- und Domänenkammer in Kleve 1792 war er dem damaligen Kammerpräsidenten Freiherr vom Stein unterstellt. Unter Steins Anleitung führte er 1793 die Verhandlungen mit dem General Hoche über die linksrheinischen Besitzungen Preußens. Zum Geheimen Oberfinanzrat befördert, ging er im folgenden Jahr zum Generaldirektorium nach Berlin. Dieses monumentale Werk von Gertha von Dieckmann gründet sich auf ihre Liebe und ihrem Engagement für die Hofrat Simon Heinrich Sack'sche Familienstiftung-eine Sache, der sie ihr Leben gewidmet hat. Sie war eine sehr versierte Autorin und Forscherin der preußischen Geschichte. Obwohl sich dieses Buch in erster Linie an Familienmitglieder richtete, enthält es wertvolle Einblicke in das Preußen des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts und in die Funktionsweise der preußischen Bürokratie-sowohl in die Zeit der Eroberung durch Napoleon als auch in die Bemühungen um den Wiederaufbau der Strukturen Preußens nach seiner Niederlage. Ein großer Teil der Bemühungen wurde von der visionären Führung der beiden in diesem Buch porträtierten Personen geleistet.Sie ebneten den Weg für die moderne Gesellschaft in Deutschland und sollten die Zukunft ganz Europas beeinflussen-nicht zuletzt wegen der beachtlichen Verbindungen dieser Personen zu England, Russland und Frankreich. Die Originalausgabe war in altdeutscher Fraktur und in Großformat gesetzt. Das vorliegende Buch wurde komplett neu gesetzt und in lateinische Schrift übertragen, um es dem modernen Leser besser zugänglich zu machen.
