Es ist nicht leicht, Johann Heinrich Voss einen Platz in dem linear geordneten deutschen Literaturparnass des 18. und beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts zuzuweisen. Er hat all diejenigen bedeutenden geistesgeschichtlichen Bewegungen tangiert, die wir - trotz manch kritischer Einspruche - noch heute als Epoche der Konstituierung der deutschen Nationalliteratur anzusehen geneigt sind, ohne sichtbar in irgendeiner aufzugehen. Sein Geburtsjahr 1751 hatte ihn - folgt man der geistesgeschichtlichen Generationstheorie - zum Sturmer und Dranger pradestiniert, der er ja auch im Gottinger Hain werden sollte. Aber er wollte oder konnte sich nicht wie Goethe in den Freiraum der asthetischen Autonomie hinuberretten. Und er konnte oder wollte nicht - trotz aller Sympathie - den Weg des franzosischen, des revolutionaren Modells gehen, den etwa Forster beschritten hatte. Und ganz sicher wollte er die Romantik nicht, fur die ihn doch eigentlich seine Sturm und Drang-Zeit hatte empfindlich oder doch wenigstens nachsichtig machen mussen. Ohne den "Ruckenwind der Literaturgeschichte erscheint er heute vielfach als Sonderling mit einer lobenswerten, weil gesellschaftskritischen Grundhaltung, mit einem auffallig passionierten Hang zur Literaturfehde gepaart mit einer biedermeierlichen Behaglichkeit, die den von ihm angefeindeten Romantikern manch ironisches Lacheln abnotigte Und doch betont Wilhelm von Humboldt, Zeitgenosse und gewiss kein unkritischer Beobachter, die Homogenitat von Leben und Werk Vossens. Am 20. September 1796 schreibt er an Goethe: "Die liebste neue Bekanntschaft auf der ganzen Reise war mir indess Voss [...] Nie habe ich in irgend einem Menschen eine solche schlechterdings nur auf Eine Sache gerichete Natur gefunden. Man muss ihm auf seinem Wege entgegenkommen, sonst ist es unmoglich sich nur mit ihm zu verstehen. Alsdann bemerkt man auch einen so unzertrennlichen Zusammenhang und eine solche Einheit in ihm, als man vielleicht nirgend sonst antrift. Die Eigenthumlichkeit seiner Uebersetzungen, seiner eignen Gedichte, seiner philologischen Arbeiten, seiner Streitigkeiten, seines Charakters und seines hauslichen Lebens sogar, alles lasst sich aus Einem und ebendemselben Princip erklaren."
